TV view

Since 1989 Het Media Instituut has been publishing reports on television, on a regular base. In these reports several subjects concerning television are discussed and analyzed. Subjects like infrastructure, policy, rules and regulations, viewing behavior, programming, media expenditures, commercial rates and – costs.

April, this year, Het Media Instituut published its eleventh television report.

Following now is an introduction of TV View 2001-2002 (April 2002)

2001 was a turbulent year in the world of television in The Netherlands: Veronica changed its name into Yorin, SBS took over broadcasting station FOX and introduced a new channel for youths: V8. MTV took over both TMF and KinderNet (a children's channel).

The year 2002 will be interesting too: the cooperation of Vereniging Veronica with MTV/TMF will result in a new channel in September, on which you can see KinderNet, Nickelodeon and Veronica. Furthermore Digitenne will start digital television and there will be experimenting with interactive television, both on the commercial channels and the public channels. The public channels are considering a 24-hour news channel and have a large budget available for the Internet.

In general the viewer is not yet very enthusiastic about digital, interactive television. Sales of the required set top boxes have been disappointing so far. Apparently, viewers appreciate the increasing number of programs on television: the time viewers watch television is still increasing.
For the tv stations developments have been less promising; the year 2001 was the turning point: after years of increase, media expenditures and the broadcasting time for commercials declined. However, the year 2000 was an excellent year, in which dotcom and telcommunication companies advertised a lot. Additionally, there were some big events in sports. For the year 2002 growth is expected.

The television report TV View gives information about subjects, like the above. TV View 2001-2002 consists of two parts: a basic report and a supplement. The supplement contains quantitative information, e.g. media expenditures, rankings of advertisers, viewing figures, costs of advertising.
